How do I add a license key check to a Blender add-on?
Copy the SunLicense Python SDK into your add-on folder (it uses only the standard library, which Blender's Python includes), add a license key property to your AddonPreferences, and call client.validate(key, host=machine_id) before unlocking your operators. On Blender 4.2 and later, check bpy.app.online_access first and declare network access in your extension's manifest.
Blender add-ons are GPL. What does a license key protect?
The GPL lets anyone share and change your code, and a license key doesn't change that: a determined user can remove a check. What you control is the key itself: who downloads new releases from your portal, who gets support and buyer roles, and access to anything you host. Shared and refunded keys stop working for all of that.
Do I have to change where I sell?
No. Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy and Payhip connect in a few clicks and their own keys become SunLicense keys; Stripe works for your own checkout. Already using Gumroad license keys? The Gumroad import brings your existing buyers over with the same keys. For stores SunLicense doesn't connect to yet, such as Superhive, issue keys from the dashboard, the API or the sunlicense CLI.
Is it free?
Yes. The Free plan covers three products, 100 licenses and 10,000 license checks a month, with no credit card. Paid plans start at $5 a month, and your artists' license checks keep working even if you go over a limit.
